Nursing initiative

Parkinson's nurses provide support and expertise to people affected by Parkinson's.

We're delighted to see their vital work championed in this way.

2 years ago, Lynn Gill - specialist Parkinson's nurse at Northern Devon Healthcare - and her team started an initiative to prevent people with Parkinson's being admitted to hospital unnecessarily.

Lynn works with people with Parkinson's across Devon, visiting them at home.

She assesses them and arranges a treatment plan to make sure that their Parkinson's is well-managed and that they can remain at home for as long as possible.

This not only benefits people with Parkinson's, and their families and carers, but can also save the NHS money.

This is highlighted in our Protect Parkinson's nurses campaign and a recent neurology report from the National Audit Office.

Lynn has also worked to educate other members of staff about Parkinson's through an education day in 2009.

She's holding a similar education day this year, during Parkinson's Awareness Week 2012.
