Leading women's magazines highlight Parkinson's
12 April 2010
We hope to see more stories like this in the media in the coming weeks. It's vital that we raise awareness of Parkinson's and its impact on people's lives.
Nicola Brian, Director of Communications
Last week's That's Life! magazine included a full page feature
about Andrea Stott, who talks movingly
about living with Parkinson's as a young mother of 37.
The article, "I couldn't stop shaking", in the 1 April issue,
describes the effects of Parkinson's on Andrea's life and marriage.
Andrea has also set up a Parkinson’s support group in her local
area because "we all need to know we're not alone".
In addition, Woman's Weekly, which comes out tomorrow (13 April)
is running a double page feature in the "Your good health" section
on early diagnosis of Parkinson's and treatments. It also
highlights 5 ways to cope with Parkinson's, including the
importance of diet, weight and exercise.
These leading women's magazines, with a combined readership of
nearly 1 million, are highlighting Parkinson's in the run up to
Parkinson's Awareness Week next week. Both features include our
website address and helpline number.
Parkinson's Awareness Week next week
During Parkinson’s Awareness Week -
taking place next week from 19 to 25 April - people with
Parkinson’s will be telling their stories across the UK media. Our
local branches and support groups will
be running events and fundraising activities.
Nicola Brian, our Director of Communications, comments:
"We are delighted with these features and are hoping to see more
stories like this in the media in the coming weeks.
"It's vital that we raise awareness of Parkinson's and its
impact on people's lives. This year's Awareness Week is all about
giving people affected by Parkinson's a stronger voice."
