Hospital care in Wales: dignified and respectful? Share your
experiences
21 July 2010
We are calling on older people with Parkinson's who've recently had a hospital stay
to submit evidence to the Older People's Commissioner for Wales as
part of a
review on dignity and respect in hospitals.
If you're aged 60 or over, have Parkinson's and have stayed in
hospital in Wales for more than 5 consecutive days in the last 2
years, you can share your experiences - both good and bad - with
the Commissioner.
How you can take part
We're keen to gather views to submit a response on behalf of
Parkinson's UK. Email us at campaigns@parkinsons.org.uk
by Monday 2 August 2010 if you have any experiences to share.
Alternatively you can submit a response directly to the review
team by emailing ask@olderpeoplewales.com.
Their deadline is Monday 16 August 2010.
If you submit a response directly to the Older People's
Commissioner, please also forward it to us at campaigns@parkinsons.org.uk
The inquiry
The inquiry is looking for evidence on a number of
issues:
- communication
- privacy
- personal hygiene
- end of life care
- planning for discharge
- food and nutrition
They want to know if older people are being treated as
individuals and whether they are given all the information and
support they need in hospital - including how to complain if they
wish.
For many
people with Parkinson's, the level of understanding about the
condition amongst health and social care professionals and how this
impacts on Parkinson’s treatment within
hospitals is an ongoing issue.
This is highlighted in our 'Get it on
time' campaign, where we're campaigning to make sure that
people with Parkinson's in hospital get their medication on time -
every time.
The review is a great opportunity to highlight people's
experiences and make suggestions for improvement. And it's also a
chance to celebrate good care.
